Welcome to the Kahurangi Outpost, a new accommodation lodge in Golden Bay.  We hope you enjoy your stay.

SAFETY  You are enjoying a remote place. If you get into difficulties you cannot rely on an immediate response for fire or ambulance.  There is a landline at Kahurangi Outpost (toll barred), cell phone coverage in this area is variable, so if hiking, swimming etc allow lots of extra margin for safety.

WATER is our most valuable resource.  Although it rains a lot here, it does not fall evenly, and long periods without rain are common.  Rainwater is collected, stored and reticulated to kitchen and ablution block. The water for the outside tap comes from the creek.  The village of Mangarakau drank this water for years, and some still do, but it is untreated.  If this concerns you do not drink from the outside tap.

FIRE is a very real danger.  Fire Assembly point is beside the swimming pool.  You are 42 km and one hour from the nearest fire brigade unit.  Please use great care in the kitchen and outside.  All bunkrooms and the common room have smoke alarms.  Please do not touch them at all.  There are two fire extinguishers on the end walls of the kitchen.

SMOKING All buildings are non-smoking at all times.  Smokers, for fire safety reasons please take great care in extinguishing your butts.  Grind them into bare soil, do not throw them away.

TOILETS  There are currently three composting toilets.  They conserve water and reduce discharge into the ground.

SWIMMING POOL is for your use at your risk. Please read and obey the rules.

TENNIS COURT is for your use at your risk.  Ask the manager for tennis balls.

RUBBISH We would love you to take it with you.  We have no system for it’s removal to the nearest refuse station, 42 km away, and are naturally reluctant to make a return trip to do so.  If you do not remove your rubbish there will be an extra charge of $5 per person to defray expenses.   After all, you got it here, when it was heavier and bulkier.  Food scraps suitable for composting can be placed in the compost bin to the right of the two green water tanks.

NOISE: for the enjoyment of all we ask that quietness prevails from 11 pm (unless you are part of a group that fills Kahurangi Outpost)

MEDICAL CARE:  If you need to consult a doctor (or nurse) the number of the Golden Bay Medical Centre in Takaka is 525 9911. Just before you reach the main shopping area of Takaka, on the right (coming from Collingwood) you will see a sign that reads Golden Bay Medical Centre.
Four days a week there is a doctor available for consultations in Collingwood at the clinic of the Rest Home (Joan Whiting Memorial Rest Home) that you passed just before you turn right to Collingwood. The number to ring is 524 8307. It is best to ring there first as you may be able to save yourself driving the half hour from Collingwood to Takaka.

BUYING FOOD:  Val and Graham Williams operate a freight/mail service to Mangarakau on a five-day a week basis. If you wish groceries to be picked up and brought out to Kahurangi Outpost you may ring the shop at Collingwood General Store 524 8221 to order groceries and then contact Val or Graham at 524 8168 to pick up your order and deliver it to you. The freight cost will be added to your grocery account so you can pay for both when you settle up at the shop on your way out.
