How to get to Kahurangi Outpost

Kahurangi Outpost is approx 42 km and one hour west of Collingwood which in turn is about 20 minutes and 27 km from Takaka.  Takaka is 55 km from Motueka, separated by the impressive Takaka Hill, sometimes called The Marble Mountain, and Nelson is about another 45 km further east.

You can bus from Nelson or Motueka to Takaka.

Some backpackers run buses from Takaka to Collingwood. eg Somerset House in Collingwood will pick up customers from Takaka and bring them to Collingwood.  They also will run a taxi service from Collingwood to Mangarakau on demand.  See their web site at www.backpackerscollingwood.co.nz  Or you may like to look up transport to Golden Bay, if so try the Kahurangi Bus service.  They run services from Blenheim, Nelson, Motueka and Takaka as well as the Heaphy Track etc.  See www.kahurangi.co.nz

Directions from Collingwood

The road is very picturesque, particularly when winding around WestHaven Inlet, crossing causeways and rivers and passing through rainforest containing Rata trees which usually bloom profusely in December and January.  Their red blossom is impressive.  The road is narrow and mostly shingle so should be driven cautiously.

From Collingwood drive along the waterfront past the wharf.  At the first intersection (by Joan Whiting Rest Home) turn right and then right at the next intersection crossing a small one way bridge.  Continue along this road, crossing the main one-lane bridge over the Aorere. (2.3 km).  Proceed through Pakawau (13 km).  Cross over the Pakawau Inlet (14.2 km) and turn left at the next intersection, marked with both Westhaven Inlet and Mangarakau. This road wends its way over a low  saddle and becomes shingle.  (18.5 km)  Follow this road ignoring all side roads crossing Muddy Creek (23km), White Pine Creek (24 km), Wairoa River (28 km) and Banjo Creek ( 30 km).  From here you climb up the Mangarakau Saddle ((32  km) where the turnoffs to Knuckle Hill and the Kaituna Track are signposted.  Admire the views of the entrance to WestHaven Inlet.  Wend down to the bottom, cross Island Creek (34 km), pass the Mangarakau Wharf (35 km) and the Mangarakau Swamp Drain then just a few more km leaving the Inlet until the road changes to tar seal. (about 42 km)  When on tar seal look for signage on the right hand side.  If you run out of tar seal you have gone too far!!!
