HISTORY The existing classroom, now a common room, was built about 1948. The school was officially closed about 1999 but was used as a Correspondence School Unit for some time. We purchased it in November 2002 by auction and immediately spent a lot of time and effort reversing the effects of the years of neglect by cutting drains, clearing the tennis court, stopping leaks in the roof, repairing the fireplace etc. We had the four bedrooms built, and continued the wide covered verandas that were in front of the classroom on two sides, and concurrently changed the long-unused toilet block and storeroom into an ablution block with one room containing two timed showers, hand basins set in recycled rimu and a wash tub. The adjacent room contains the shower and toilet for any handicapped patrons. Bedrooms, common room, ablution blocks and toilets are connected by roofed walkways The pool has been changed from chlorine to saltwater, which is safer and ecologically friendlier. Some of the rainwater from the roofs has been collected in two 30000 litre tanks whose visual impact has been lessened by an earth ramp planted in native trees and shrubs. The grounds have been regularly mowed and a few wee gardens begun. We opened for business the day after Boxing Day, 2004. Work continues with the three composting toilets now finished.
