Activities (in no particular order)
Surf - not for the inexperienced. Quite a few
surfers gather further south at the Anatori River.
Swim - in the pool, which we have converted to
salt-water (at your own risk), or the Patarau River mouth
lagoon, or in rock pools on the coast. Swimming in the
open sea is NOT advised, the coastal rip is very
dangerous.
Walk and/or tramp - there are many walks and tramps in
the area. Do not overlook those in the Mangarakau Swamp
Reserve. A pamphlet is on the pin-board. For others
see our link Walks and Tramps
Photograph - there are many wonderful sights to
record; birds, scenes, botanical specimens, people, seascapes
etc.
Picnic - There are many scenic sites, apart from the
seaside, where great picnics can be had. As you
drive/walk/wander keep an eye out.
Bird watching - we have seen tuis, bellbirds,
riflemen, bitterns, fantails, NZ Falcons... as well as ducks,
geese, seabirds etc and at night we have heard Moreporks and
Bitterns (in season). Photograph these and send us a copy,
we will add it to the wall with your name or to our website if
it is a digital one.
Caving - The limestone cliffs abound in caves and
holes (tomos). Some are on private land and require
landowner's permission, If you are inexperienced then
contact a caving club - they come here regularly and will
sometimes allow novices.
Tennis - the court is old and a little uneven, so you
need to watch the ball! At your own risk.
Silver Pine Gallery (in season or by arrangement)
displays wood carvings.
Eat: The Nugget Cafe (in season or by arrangement) makes a
delicious latte and has great tucker. They will do evening
meals by arrangement (03 5248 051).
Click on this link for more
details.
Windsurf - again, not for the inexperienced. The
next stop could be Australia!
Fish - whitebaiting in season, surfcasting, there are
trout in the Patarau and eels in most rivers and Lake Otuhie.
Westhaven Inlet from the Wairoa River is a Marine Reserve.
As you head out you can fish the coast and either side of Muddy
Creek, and the seaward side of the Wairoa, Banjo Creek etc but
not the coast side. From the far side of Knuckle Hill fishing is
not allowed either side of the road with one exception, you can
fish from the Mangarakau Wharf. See pamphlets pinned on
the wall.
Dive - for crayfish, paua, butterfish. Care is
needed, this is a wild coast.
Canoe or Kayak - options include much of Westhaven
Inlet and Big River further south if you have 4WD and trailer.
Lake Otuhie is very scenic and interesting, about 10 km south of
Kahurangi Outpost.
4WD - to Kahurangi Lighthouse. Many 4WD clubs have
made this trip. Not for the novice, there is some
quicksand and some of the river crossings are tricky and can be
very expensive!!! There are several other interesting
possibilities for clubs and larger groups if under the control
of locals. Email us for details if interested.

Mountain Bike - A few have mountain biked some or all
of the Knuckle Hill walk. Ask about the Viaduct Track.
The coast is hard work amongst the sand but very scenic.
